Finally uploaded my fourth year report on Zipf’s Law & Linguistic Entropy[pdf]. I’ll make a HTML version available as soon as I can.
In brief, Zipfs law applied to linguistics relates the rank and frequency of single words. We discuss generalised thermostatistics and demonstrate that a framework of Naudts-Czachor generalised thermostatistics can describe the statistical behaviour of words outside the mid-range of word ranks that follow Zipfs law. While such formulations may lack the simplistic appeal of Zipfs law, they can be used to explain linguistic structure inaccessible to us using Zipfs law. Using principal component analysis, we study the fitted parameters for a range of texts, showing that they are characteristic of the author and intended audience, even when based on reasonably small samples of the original text.
We then examine the occurrence of two-word phrases in relation to their single word probabilities, demonstrating a proposal by Egghe (J. Am. Soc. Info. Sci., 50, 223 (1998)) of the approximate power-law. We introduce a pair-vocabulary reduction constant in an attempt to incorporate the effects of syntax and semantics. This modification to Egghes proposal improves the quantitative agreement with our empirical findings. Finally, we examine the existence of kernel and unlimited lexica for single-words and two-word phrases, each of which corresponds to a different Zipfian regime. We show that there is good evidence for a kernel lexicon in English of about 43 words.
