There’s a (slashdotted) story on BBC about Prof. Windle’s work, presumable joint-funded by CMI, on continuously forming/spinning nanotubes into a continous thread (link).
From the spiel, the thread doesn’t seem to be that strong (the /. posting (link) naturally plays up the hopes of a space elevator), alhough the article mentions it’s conducting properties, which could be interesting.

It may be a bit of a cliche but I really have got so much to do and so little time…
…not that this is really a bad thing for a DPhil student; it would be much worse if I had nothing to do.
I need to:
1) Repeat CNT-drying experiments in an attempt to show repeatable (interesting) behaviour.
2) Do this again with cobaltacene-filled tubes.
3) Attempt to understand effect of atmosphere on behaviour: i.e., cooling & humidity of N2 gas.
4) Perform some proper C-V measurements, this time changing the BACK GATE BIAS!
5) .. and then write this all up in an informative, exciting, and interesting account before the end of August.
HMG.
