iBead, therefore I am.

My really old iBead-100 has been playing up for a number of months now. First the screen nearly completely faded, then the sound kept cutting out. The headphone jack was obviously loose and there was an omninous rattling sound from inside.

Still flushed from the sucess of getting Audrey working again, I popped off the case of the iBead with little haste….and was rather shocked, mainly at the large amount of sand inside. The rubber part of the LCD screen was completely covered in grains of multicoloured sand (when was the last time I went on holiday?), but the headphone jack was indeed completely free from it’s connectors. After managing to solder it back to the three connecting pads, it purrs as good as ever. Better, in fact, now that I’ve bothered to upgrade the firmware. See the links below for more details.

The Daily Telegraph’s Spy is reporting that Donald Sutherland, one of my favourite ‘out-there’ actors, has been case as Mr Bennet in the forthcoming film production of Pride & Prejudice.

Spy also reported last week that Rosamund Pike and ex-boyfriend Simon Woods had been cast as on-screen lovers Jane and Mr Bingley, much to her Oxonian boyfriend artist Henry John’s annoyance.

Sutherland, Pike, and Woods are joined by Brenda Blethyn as Mrs Bennet.

I’ve gone and done it now…

Yup, I’ve gone and done it now…I’ve ordered my Powerbook.

It’s not as extravagent as it sounds; at least I hope it’s not. I managed to get a good deal from the US Apple Education site (via my old MIT account & memories of the 02139 zip-code).

JLP’s picking it up when she goes home so by mid-August, i.e., frantic-report-writing-time, I’ll have a new machine to play around with LaTeX on.

And that leads me to my one big worry: finding enough software for OS X (10.3). Sure, LaTeX is easy; it’s open source. It’s other important (but less critical softare)… an office suite (OpenOffice still hasn’t got a native OS X version, and one’s not due until Q2 2005 after the release of 2.0), mathematical packages (Mathematica is available on the Mac, and so is MatLab, as it’s just Java, but getting hold of licences will be difficult), and the new love-of-my-life LabView, which is available on OS X but we don’t have it at work.

As there don’t appear to be any OSS alternatives to LabView, at least none that share formats, I’ll need another solution. Virtual PC 6.1 from Microsoft is expensive (even without an included OS) and only runs Windows 2000 and 98 at any real speed. So, I’ll probably be left with using my lovely shiny new Mac as a dumb terminal to log into a Windows box via Remote Desktop or VNC. Great.
